Cupra Firmly Advances 2030 U.S. Market Plan, Adapting To Trump's Tariff Challenges

According to media reports, Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths stated that despite the U.S. government's threat to impose higher tariffs on European cars, the Volkswagen Group's sporty Spanish brand Cupra remains committed to entering the U.S. market by 2030.

Wayne Griffiths emphasized, "Cupra's decision to enter the U.S. market by 2030 remains unchanged. This is a long-term decision and should not be influenced by short-term fluctuations." Cupra's models are primarily manufactured in Europe and China. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on imported European passenger cars, significantly higher than the current 2.5% rate.

Entering the U.S. market will help Cupra reduce its reliance on Europe. According to Cupra's 2024 financial report, only 10% of its €14.5 billion ($15.8 billion) in sales came from markets outside Europe. This move also aligns with Volkswagen Group's North American expansion strategy, which includes launching the Scout truck brand in 2027.

Originally the racing division of Volkswagen Group's SEAT brand, Cupra became an independent brand in 2018. In 2023, the company began conducting market tests in preparation for a potential U.S. expansion.

Last year, Wayne Griffiths revealed that the all-electric Cupra Formentor compact crossover, along with a larger Cupra electric crossover, would be introduced to the U.S. market. To avoid tariffs, these vehicles will be produced at Volkswagen Group's North American factories.

Griffiths stated that Cupra's U.S. product lineup is still under evaluation, but the specific models and production locations will be finalized by the end of June. He expects at least two models to be included to support a flexible market strategy.

While Cupra initially planned to launch only electric vehicles in the U.S., it may now introduce both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric models. Griffiths pointed out that every Volkswagen Group brand must adjust its strategy based on market realities, including political shifts and changing consumer preferences.

Cupra plans to begin U.S. sales on the East Coast, West Coast, and in sunbelt states such as Arizona. The company has engaged in discussions with Penske Automotive Group regarding potential distribution partnerships. Griffiths stated that negotiations with Penske are "very promising," but Cupra must first finalize the specific models it will offer before reaching any agreements.
